Production-environmental Quality Demonstration Farm
نویسنده
چکیده
The reduction of agricultural nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is essential to protect the quality of North Carolina's water resources. In order to reduce these pollutants, increased implementation of Best Management Practices (BMPs) by individual producers is being proposed. Recommended BMPs include soil and water conservation practices, fertilizer and animal waste management and integrated pest management. However, little quantifiable data exists on BMP system effectiveness in reducing NPS losses or on any associated economic benefits. In order to obtain such information, a pair of privately owned farms in the piedmont of Wake County were studied during 1982. One farm was used as a control, with no BMPs being used except soil testing. The experimental farm produces swine and utilizes a variety of BMPs ranging from no-till to land application of swine waste. During 1982, the loss of water, sediment and nutrients from each farm was measured. Results show water yield to be 50% lower, sediment yield 99% lower, and total nitrogen and total phosphorus yield to be 80% lower on a per acre basis from the experimental farm compared to the control farm. With specific data available on BMP effectiveness, it is hoped that producer BMP implementation will increase across North Carolina.

Organic livestock farming A critical review
Based on production guidelines, organic livestock farming has set itself the goal of establishing environmentally friendly production, sustaining animals in good health, realising high animal welfare standards, and producing products of high quality. By striving for these goals, organic livestock farming meets the demands of an increasing number of consumers who are critical of conventional pro...
متن کاملThe effect of trout farm effluents on the water quality parameters of Zaringol Stream (Golestan, Iran) based on NSFWQI and WQI indexes
The aim of this study was to assess the potential impact of Trout farm effluents on water quality of Zaringol stream based on NSFWQI and WQI indexes. Some physicochemical water quality parameters were measured from 14 point during December 2009 to September 2010 seasonality. The average value of NSFWQI is 53.21 and it shows spatial and temporal variation. The maximum value or best water quality...
متن کاملEvaluating livestock system environmental performance with whole-farm nutrient balance.
As a part of the USEPA's concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) final rule, all CAFOs are required to develop and implement a nutrient management plan (NMP). The USEPA's emphasis on better management of nutrients appropriately targets a critical environmental issue associated with animal production. The concentration of animals in livestock feeding operations, often separate from feed gra...
متن کاملStudy of the Ubiquitous Hog Farm System Using Wireless Sensor Networks for Environmental Monitoring and Facilities Control
Many hog farmers are now suffering from high pig mortality rates due to various wasting diseases and increased breeding costs, etc. It is therefore necessary for hog farms to implement systematic and scientific pig production technology to increase productivity and produce high quality pork in order to solve these problems. In this study, we describe such a technology by suggesting a ubiquitous...
متن کاملImportance of information on tillage practices in the modelling of environmental processes and in the use of environmental indicators.
Tillage has been and will always be integral to crop production. Tillage can result in the degradation of soil, water, and air quality. Of all farm management practices, tillage may have the greatest impact on the environment. A wide variety of tillage equipment, practices and systems are available to farmers, providing opportunities to enhance environmental performance. These opportunities hav...
